I tend to lean on the argument that Jessica is a mental problem, but not just a "normal" mental problem. It's part of her power, which is stress-related. Like tramlaw said, the other personality was named after Niki's sister. She doesn't remember the abuse, as we have learned from her conversations with her father in Six Months Ago. These are repressed memories, which a side effect of DID. The memories come out when Jessica comes out. Jessica saying she took the hits for Niki, implies that the split personality comes out when she's abused. Another reason for that would be that it's just part of her mental craziness.
For those that are wondering why I say that logic says Jessica is a mental problem, I'll explain myself. I basically copy and paste the information because it comes up so often. You may or may not have heard of this before.
Niki’s power is “special stress.” Her ability gives her “special” effects of stress. She has developed a “special” Dissociative Identity Disorder and a “special” adrenaline-activated enhanced strength. This would explain how Niki is able to communicate with Jessica through reflections, the “special” DID. When in stressful situations, like any other normal DID or adrenaline, the “special” DID is activated, along with “special” adrenaline. It's a branch off her power. This is similar to how Peter's mimicry is an extent of his actual power of empathy. Hiro's teleportation and slowing down/stopping/speeding up time branch off space/time manipulation. The Haitian can erase memories and nullify (certain?) abilities. Although his power is still unclear, we know that his ability messes with the brain (perhaps only certain areas of it) and has “branched off” effects. They all have powers that “branch off.”
Niki's power is stress-related. There is no astral or consciousness projection, ghosts, spirits, possession, or any of that crap. Tim Kring has stated in an interview that the heroes’ powers are based purely on their personalities.
* Peter, being a nurse, he is connecting with his patients' emotions. He has to know how they feel and take care of them. Peter has empathy.
* Matt, being a cop, has a task to keep order in society and bring criminals to justice. It isn't a surprise that he has the ability hear thoughts. His power that is very beneficial for a police officer, nobody can hide their thoughts from him, he can interrogate people perfectly.
* D.L., being an ex-convict, was on the run. He was confined in chains, cuffs, and the security of a cell. He developed the ability of phasing, moving through solid objects.
* Micah, being a child genius working with computers and technology, has technopathic-like powers.
* Sylar, being a watchmaker, restores watch pieces. His occupation requires analyzing complex systems; he has to know how every gear and piece in the watch works. He developed the power of intuitive aptitude, the ability to analyze complex systems and understand them. He can “see how things work.”
* Claire, being a cheerleader, has a “treacherous” job. She is clumsy and always gets hurt. Her mother has pyrokinesis. With Meredith around her, she is always in potential danger. She turned out to have rapid regeneration.
* Nathan is a politician. He has ambition and wants to reach new heights. He also served in the US navy as a pilot. He and his wife, Heidi, were in a car accident. Nathan needed a method of escape. His power is human flight.
* Hiro is an office worker, a Star Trek fan, has a boring job, and wants to speed up time. He developed the power of space/time manipulation.
* Isaac was a drug addict, addicted to heroin. This can be compared to hallucinations, messing with one's head, etc. He's also an artist/painter; he has an occupation widely classified as visionary. Being an artist, he has many insights and ideas. An artist feels the future. He developed a precognitive power, seeing the future.
* Claude is a hobo; nobody knows he exists except some pigeons. He also practices thievery, snooping around snatching items here and there. His power is invisibility.
* Brian Davis seemed to be a lazy man. He didn't want anything, such as his own power, he seemed to be the guy that didn't want to take the effort to master his telekinesis, he behaved like this with his power, and probably behaved the same lazy way before his power developed. His power is telekinesis, a “lazy” power.
* Charlie is a waitress. She has to remember customers and their orders. Her ability is eidetic memory.
* Dale is a mechanic. She has to hear the motor of a car to try to figure out its problem. Her power is enhanced hearing.
* Eden used to live with her stepmom. She was really quiet and didn't get her way. She was in prison with her stepmother and wanted freedom and control. Her power is persuasion gave her freedom and control.
* Ted had a job as a medical equipment salesman. Plenty of medical equipment contain radiation. His power is radiation emission.
* Hana wanted to be a hero. She wanted to make a difference. Her power turned out to be electronic data transception, her power allowed her to become the perfect spy. She could make a difference.
* Meredith is a smoker. Her ability is pyrokinesis, she lights her cigarettes with her ability.
* Sanjog Iyer is a wise boy. Chandra Suresh sees him as a spirit guide. People go to him because they have questions that need answers. His power is dream manipulation. Dreams are a mystical concept. There is plenty of surreal imagery and hidden meanings in dreams. Dreams can teach you morals and you can discover the deeper meaning. He uses his powers to guide people.
* Candice Wilmer is a female temptress who, according to an earlier casting breakdown, “wields a tremendous amount of sex appeal” and is willing to “get her hands dirty” for her employer. She has the power of illusion, and can fool one's perception of reality to get what her employer wants.
* Linderman’s mother was ill and he wanted her to get well. He was also field medic during the war. His ability is healing. He also achieves a "mob boss" status. With his ability, he can decide who lives or dies.
Let's take a look at Niki again: Niki was an alcoholic. She was abused as a child by her abusive and alcoholic father. She goes through the stress of a single mother. As a single mother, she wants to be in two places at once. Her sister died when she was young. She has repressed memories and doesn’t remember the abusiveness of her father, a symptom of DID. Niki has suffered a lot of mental trauma. Her power turns out to be stress-related—“special stress.” She develops a “special” case of Dissociative Identity Disorder, a side effect of mental trauma and stress. Her split personality is a violent, strong, and dangerous one. This strength can be classified as adrenaline, another side effect of stress. These are all “special” effects of stress. Niki's ability is “special stress.” _________________

Ando's dead, yes.
Another very plausible explanation for Niki is that she has super strength, but also has Dissociative Identity Disorder and schizophrenia--A double dose of mental illness. _________________

Thanks.
Niki's situation kind of reminds me of the movie "A Beautiful Mind", the guy is in a similar situation, except he doesn't have a split personality, just schizophrenia. He sees people that aren't there and hears voices that aren't there. It was a really good movie. _________________
